Recommended Pre and Post-Teeth Whitening Care

At Picasso Smiles Dental, we are dedicated to making sure that our patients get the best care available. That means that if you come in for a cosmetic procedure, we want to make sure that it matches or exceeds your expectations. However, we find that our most successful patients are involved in their treatment too.

Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic procedures that we complete. Our professional teeth whitening solutions offer far better results than you can receive at home and can get your teeth to a brilliant and dazzling shade of white. There are a number of things that we suggest that you do before you get your procedure to get the best results. Additionally, if you follow some of our aftercare guidance, you can maintain that brilliant smile for longer.

Before Your Appointment

Before you come in for your appointment, there are not any drastic changes that you need to make to receive the best results. However, smoking is one of the leading causes of tooth discoloration. Smoking can leave a film over your teeth that will prohibit the whitening solution from coming into contact with your teeth. For that reason, we ask that you quit smoking before your whitening procedure to help reduce the amount of residue left on your teeth.

On the morning of your whitening procedure, you should also thoroughly clean your teeth. This means that you should brush for at least two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You should also floss to help remove additional debris from around the teeth and allow the whitening solution to penetrate the available surfaces on your teeth completely. Utilizing a mouthwash can also help to remove some material from your mouth and teeth to allow for better results.

After the Appointment

Once your teeth whitening is complete, your teeth can be more susceptible to issues in the following 24 hours. For the next day, there are a few guidelines that we ask you to observe to help ensure your results are long-lasting.

  • Avoid drinks that can stain teeth – These drinks include coffee, tea, and red wine. In addition, other alcoholic drinks, colored soft drinks, and even fruit juices can minimize the effectiveness of your whitening treatment.

  • Avoid staining foods – There are a number of different foods that can stain your teeth. A number of berries, such as blackberries and blueberries, are notorious for wreaking havoc on a recent teeth whitening procedure. In addition, you should avoid bologna, soy sauce, red meat, and any fruits (with the exception of bananas). As a general rule, you should avoid any food or drink that would leave a stain on a white shirt.

  • Stop smoking – Smoking within the first 24 hours of your teeth whitening will leave stains. Smoking after the 24 hour period will not stain as dramatically but will deteriorate the effectiveness of your whitening over time. At this time, electronic smoking does not appear to have a drastic effect on the color of your teeth, but should also be avoided during the first 24 hours.

  • Avoid colored dental products – Toothpaste that has special dyes or mouthwashes that are colored can stain your teeth during the first 24 hours. Instead, opt for products that are not colored during the first day.
