At Picasso Smiles Dental, we take pride in helping our patients maintain beautiful, healthy smiles. Our dentists are experts in a wide variety of sub-specialties and treatment methods, and we strive to take an individualized approach to treat patients. But dental care goes beyond just a smile - for many patients, the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be a major source of pain and irritation. This is why Dr. Nima Shayesteh has chosen to take a two-year advanced training and credentialing in TMD care and treatment to help treat the El Paso community.
TMJ, also known as TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), is a broad term applied to general issues and pain affecting the jaw joint. It's relatively common and can range widely in intensity and severity. The problem starts with the bite - sometimes the teeth fit together in a way that causes the jaw joint to rest in a way that stresses the ligaments, nerves, and other components of the joint. This can create chronic irritation of the joint, resulting in a wide range of symptoms including unexplained tooth sensitivity, gum recession, pain, and a variety of other issues.
Thankfully, treatment is usually fairly simple. We can make a custom-made appliance, called a Face Orthopedic Stabilization Appliance (FOSA), to ease irritation and relieve pain. The FOSA is a highly specialized appliance that's manufactured specifically to fit your unique jaw and bite - it's much more detailed than a traditional night guard, which simply acts as a buffer between the teeth. Accordingly, treatment with a FOSA is more involved - it'll require two appointments and about two and a half hours of 'chair time' with the dentist. We'll use this time to make detailed measurements of your mouth, jaw, and bite, helping us design your FOSA to perfectly fit your mouth and position your jaw correctly.
Once you have your FOSA, you'll to wear it every night as you sleep. Keeping it clean is vital for effective treatment, so be sure to brush it thoroughly after wearing it. With daily use and conscientious care, a FOSA is a critical step for relieving TMJ irritation and pain.
